Yet More Kitchen Humor

I guess I could be writing about all the cool recipes I’m working on, or how I see myself advancing in the kitchen, or how we are seeing a great increase in business with the onslaught of football season, but really, I know what my readers want. You want to hear about even more stupid jokes and pranks that are pulled in the kitchen. Some of the previous stories I have shared can be found here and here. And as luck would have it, stupid jokes seem to happen around me all the time. Especially because I like to pull them. So some of our recent special menus have had us bringing in a collection of seemingly odd - I guess I could say “less conventional” - ingredients. Lamb tongues, pig ears and quail eggs are all items I have had to place orders for as of late. I am not saying these are bad things - they all can be made into really neat food items actually, it’s just that most people will sort of take a step back for a second when they first hear that the salad

Creative Kitchen Designing

I visited a blog I have been following for some time. It’s about a "gut" renovation of a charming, old house in Sag Harbor, that really wonderful town on the east end of Long Island. I’ve been waiting SO patiently to see what was going to happen in the kitchen, and finally, the images are up. Brooke Williams, Domino blog editor extraordinaire, (and mom-to-be very soon) did some pretty interesting things with her and her husband’s kitchen. Definitely alternative!Take a look at this kitchen post for more very interesting images and information on the kitchen. The message, here, is that kitchens come in all different types and styles for all different reasons, and, in the end, should be as individual as you are! Perhaps you would not have certain design elements or products such as is designed into this kitchen (no upright refrigerator, only 2 under counters opposite the range!) but Brooke and her husband thought this through carefully and decided a spacious, open feel was wh

Blogging Kitchen Blogs

Let’s see who’s talking about what in the kitchen focused blogosphere…K+BB Green’s Jeff Holloway, CKD, who blogs on green kitchen and bath products, issues, and ideas, also looks at green focused kitchen and bath issues, but look beyond that post, and you will be enlightened in a green way.Peggy Deras, CKD, from Kitchen-exchange, has a great post on a free service for lighting questions. Let me tell you, planning lighting for any room in your home SHOULD be given first rate attention. It’s a small price to pay (in this case none) to get it right the first time and to "see" clearly what you need and want to see!Ann Porter, CKD, of Kitchann Style has a very interesting post on opening up, or visually enlarging small kitchens. Now, the conventional wisdom says that one must pack in as much storage as is possible in a small kitchen. As Ann says, it’s more about finding alternative storage solutions, with the benefit of a much more spacious look to an otherwise small feelin

Kitchen Designer Diary - A Day In The Life

From time to time I will share with you real life client meetings, like today. It was an interesting day today. I had received a call last week from a woman who asked about my kitchen design services, as she and her husband are planning a kitchen renovation. I was immediately intrigued when she said they lived on Fire Island. Fire Island is a very long, and very narrow, strip of land, beyond the south shore of Long Island, about 1/2 an hour off of Long Island by boat, reachable only by private boat or ferry. No cars are allowed on the island, and there are several small towns. It’s all about the beach on Fire Island! I was born and raised on Long Island, and I had never been to Fire Island, the residential section of Fire Island, as opposed to the public ocean beaches, a totally separate area, so I was interested in going. The trip there and back was time consuming. I live on the north shore of Long Island, a straight shot across the island from the ferry on the south shore. Here’s

A Simple Weight Loss Tool in Your Kitchen

You may have heard it before, but now research has proved it: Using smaller plates and smaller bowls can help you lose weight. In our super-sized society, not only are food portions huge, but these outsized meals are usually served on large plates. What we choose to serve our food on is one of the easiest and most direct ways to control portions, and smaller portions means less calories, which means weight loss. The other day, I compared the diameter of a newer set of plates I often use to the sizes of an antique set I have. The newer plates are almost 11 inches in diameter, whereas the antique plates are just 8 inches across. And one other thing about plates: Not only do smaller plates encourage weight loss, but the way you place the foods on your plate can also help you cut calories. Think of dividing up your meals this way: use ¼ of the plate for protein, ¼ for carbohydrates, and the remaining ½ for vegetables (remember that vegetables are the lowest-calorie food gr

Don’t Use DesignMyRoom.com For Kitchen Design

DesignMyRoom.com can yield some silly, but fun, creations Have you wanted to design your own kitchen, but don’t have the tools? My 3D CAD software frequently impresses my clients, because my software lets them design in real time. I can rearrange cabinet layouts, change countertops, and appliances with only a few clicks. They can tweak the kitchen to their heart’s desire. DesignMyRoom.com locks you into their set kitchen layouts and carries a poor selection of countertops. Start your project Hit “Start a project” at the top. They only have a couple pictures of kitchensI chose from their stock photos and used kitchen cabinets, but you can design any room you want. Drag and drop your countertops and floors choices onto the photo. Unfortunately, there aren’t any granite countertops. The appliances are mostly modern, so those going for a rustic look will be disappointed. Show off your project Register and save your project so you can show off your cra

The Bustle In The Kitchen

It was like Iron Chef when I walked in the kitchen this morning. Pieces of bread were flying, the boys were wielding knives dripping with condiments, and I had to duck as Finn tossed a banana to Drew, who stuck it in a lunch bag. My boys always get the plate lunch at school, so I wondered why Porter was putting the finishing touches on a honey and mayonnaise sandwich. Finn pointed at the school menu, and then I knew. School cafeteria meatloaf. It may be worse than my mom’s. Two years ago in My Tiny Kingdom: Not A Normal Day

Restoran Kam’s Kitchen

Restoran Kam’s kitchen , started off as a little Tai Chow, situated under a huge tree in Kampung Cheras Baru , off Jalan Kuari. To be more exact they were situated only outside of Poh Yep (famous door manufacturer). They opened only at night. They have now moved to the shops next to the big tree now.Kam’s famous for offering simple food which tastes good, small servings, and reasonable pricing. It has become a joint where I could go have a quick dinner with mum and dad. I mean just the three of us, if you wanted a variety of dishes , but don’t wanna stuff yourself up too much, this restaurant’s the place to eat. A vegetable dish is priced from RM6, meat from RM 8, and fish ( very reasonable). Usually we’d just come by and order one Vege, one Fish , One Meat, and maybe a Chicken Dish… but two weeks back, we just wanted to try out something a bit special from them.We ordered a Steamed Cod Fish, Mutton Curry, Nai Yau Prawns, and Fried Brinjal. We ordered COD fish, because w
